Our guest speaker, Julie Frizzi, was then introduced and gave us a great presentation about her new book “Powerful You!”  Ms. Frizzi is a guidance counselor at Lake Park Elementary School and teaches an empowerment class to all the 3rd graders in her school using her new book, “Powerful You!” The book contains 26 real stories from children she has counseled with issues.  She shares a story each week with a class and gets the kids to open up and share about their own issues to help in stopping such things as bullying.  Her book is available on Amazon.com and she wants to get the book and instruction course in every school in Collier, Lee County and beyond.

The Doppenburgs, originally from Niagara, Canada, now live and work full time at the School of Hope.  At the end of the presentation, the Doppenburgs were presented with a check from the Club in the amount of $2,000 to further help with their endeavor.  Finally, Mel Drury was presented with a nice custom leather Rotary Gulfshore Sunset Club brief case for all the hard work he did in making the Hallowine Walk a success this year.

Our guest speakers were Mary McDonough and Christian Gehring from the  SWFL Regional Human Trafficking Coalition. Human Trafficking includes forced workers, indentured servants and prostitutes.  In Southwest Florida, most of the prostitutes are coerced into labor starting from the ages of 10 to 12 with a ratio of 5 girls to 1 boy and are required to have sex 15 to 60 times a day. The pimps are both men and women and 17 were recently busted in our area alone.  They work from hotel rooms many times moving from hotel to hotel.  If you notice a child or teenager with an older person where things just don’t look right, you are encouraged not to try to intervene but to call The National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 and report what you see.  You do not have to give your name.

Our guest speaker was Cecilia St. Arnold, National Program Manager-Florida and Executive Director of our club sponsored charity Blessings in a Backpack SWFL.  Cecilia told us how the organization is in 12 Cities throughout the US and Southwest Florida is in the top 4 cities in how many children are being served.  Basically the organization, working though Sysco Foods, provides a package of nutritious food that goes in needy children’s back-packs at school on Friday afternoon to serve the child’s family for the weekend. The food that does not need to be cooked as many of the children do not have adults around at home to cook.   Food is also distributed on Holidays and in the Summer.  The need is surprisingly great in Southwest Florida (40% of the children in the Marco Island public schools for instance-about the same on Sanibel Island-service worker children).

The program teaches physical and mental well-being to help the girls grow to be more confident and self-assured young ladies. Christine is sharing smiling faces with Rotarians, Robbie Selby, Kirstein Petry and Olga Schulz in picture attached.
