September 13, 2012 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Past President Carl Thome who gave the Invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner Past President Carl alerted the club to the status of upcoming speakers as well as describing an excellent resource for online make ups. The link has been placed on the left top of our blog so it can be used if required. The Irvine Rotary Club also offers some excellent Rotary training resources at the same site. Our speaker for the evening was Peter J. Dirr, PhD and a member of the board of directors of Medical Missionaries who help the poorest of the poor. Medical Missionaries, a 501(c)(3) company, is a volunteer group of more than 200 doctors, nurses, dentists, and others who work to improve the health of the poorest of the poor in the U.S. and throughout the world. They provide medical care and medical supplies, clothing and food to the areas they serve. One area of focus has been along the Haiti-Dominican Republic border. In Thomassique, Haiti, they have built and support a clinic (hospital), the first medical facility in this region of more than 125,000 people. They also work with the local residents to provide other health-related projects. Learn more about what they do and where they serve by clicking here.
