May 19, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The May 19, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:50pm with the Invocation and Pledge Allegiance. Following dinner President Carl reviewed a number of happenings including a successful 1,000,000 meal+ event and the fact that our club was number one in Area 2 for Rotary Foundation Giving at the 80% level. Past President Herb Buck introduced our speaker, Yasim Saad Avola, who discussed her activities with the Mexico Mission trip of the First Presbyterian Church. This is the 10th annual trip to Mexico and the high school youngsters will build 4 homes during the mission. Yasim has been involved with the project for a number of years and described it as one of her true passions. After her presentation there were a number of questions from club members. The club adjourned at 8:00pm.

May 12, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The May 12, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl with the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. Following dinner President Carl discussed a number of upcoming club happenings and events as well as meeting location changes. Past President George Leamon introduced the speaker, Jeremy Frantz, Conservation Associate from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Jeremy discussed SB 2156 Growth Management, SB 2142 Legislative Control of Water Management District Budgets, HB 993 Rulemaking, and HB 421 Agriculture Exemptions. These are all bills that the Conservancy of Southwest Florida consider bad bills. Questions and answers followed Jeremy's presentation. The club adjourned at 8pm.

May 5, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The May 5, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome with the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. Following dinner President Thome discussed the various upcoming projects and events of District 6960. The speaker Paul Mattausch, Director of the Water Department, Collier County Public Utilities Division, was introduced by Naples Sunset Rotary member Gary Blaine. Paul's presentation covered all the latest happenings at the Collier County Water Department and discussed a number of current programs that will be improving the system. Numerous questions were asked by club members and all enjoyed the excellent presentation. Following adjournment the Naples Sunset Rotary Board of Directors meeting was called to order for a discussion of upcoming club meeting sites and times and will be brought to the entire club at the Mat 12, 2011 meeting.

April 28, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The April 28, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 7:00pm with Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner President Carl presented the many upcoming Rotary activities for club members. Past President Marcus Zillman introduced the speaker Dr. Gene Landrum who discussed his just released book titled Warriors Who Win. Wizardly Warriors live in a Shangri La of the mind. Warrior Wunderkinds are enlightened zealots on a mission to reach the Pinnacle of Power. They show up armed with an aura that inspires disciples and frightens adversaries since they are fearless visionaries. Warriors Who Win never follow rules and constantly dare to be different!! Dr. Gene's presentation was well received with numerous questions from club members.

April 21, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The April 21, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by President Carl Thome who gave the Invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner President Carl reminded the board that there would be a board meeting directly after the meeting to discuss the results from the Club Assembly two weeks ago. The speaker, Jennifer Hagemann, was introduced by Rotarian Brady Young. She discussed health and nutrition and recommended the following two books: a) The China Study, T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D.; and b) Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. M.D. . She also discussed and gave us an outline to eat: 90% plants (fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, beans); 10% animal (but always organic, and make sure beef is grass fed); 85% unprocessed and uncooked; No isolated oils (no olive oil, no butter, no flaxseed oil, instead eat avocados, olives, whole flaxseeds freshly ground); and all nuts and seeds need to be raw, soaked overnight, and then eaten. She gave examples and then opened her presentation for questions from club members. A number of questions were asked and the presentation was well received by all members. The club adjourned at 8:05pm and moved into the Board Meeting.

April 14, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The April 14, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order at 6:45PM by Assistant Governor and Immediate Past President Marcus Zillman. Following Invocation and Pledge Allegiance dinner was served. The program was a hands on demonstration of District 6960 online database and resource center reviewed by Marcus Zillman. Naples Sunset Rotary members enjoyed the demonstration and were eager to go online and participate in the District database. They remarked of the user friendliness and ease of navigation. The club was adjourned at 8:00pm.

April 7, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Club Meeting


The April 7, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:45pm followed by Invocation and Pledge Allegiance. After dinner the club convened as a Club Assembly and the current happenings as well as future direction of the Club was discussed. Reports were given by President Carl Thome and Secretary/Treasurer Gary Moore. This followed by intense discussion by club members. It was determined that a Board Meeting would be convened on April 21, 2011 following the regular club meeting to discuss and to vote upon the results from the Club Assembly.

President Carl Thome and Assistant Governor Marcus Zillman will be attending the April 9, 2011 District 6960 Assembly in Port Charlotte and will be reporting about the District Assembly at the April 14, 2011 meeting.

March 31, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting and Annual Charity Raffle


The March 31, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Club meeting and Annual Charity Raffle were called to order at 7:00pm. President Carl Thome presided and delivered the Invocation and Pledge Allegiance. Following dinner the Annual Charity Raffle started with the winning of the various prizes including the grand price of $7,500. The proceeds remaining will be part of the annual Charity giving by the club. The speaker Roger Jacobson was introduced by President Carl. Roger is the Code and Harbor Master for the City of Naples. His duties consist of Harbor Master, Supervisor of the Beach Patrol Division, and Manager of Code Enforcement. He is responsible for all environmental issues on the water and land, both from an enforcement point of view and a clean up perspective. He has been certified by FEMA as a first Responder for Disasters and is a Licensed Captain. Roger discussed the many happenings at the City of Naples and within his various departments. Numerous questions were asked after his excellent speech. The meeting adjourned at 8:15pm.

The March 24, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by Carl Thome President. Followed was the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner President Carl discussed the latest Rotary happenings both for the club as well as for the District. George Leamon, Program Chairman introduced the speaker, Randy Merrill. Randy discussed his involvement over many years in the local and state sports happenings and his presentation was well received by the entire club with a number of questions. The club was adjourned at 8:01pm.

March 17, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The March 17, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary St. Patrick's Day Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:45pm and followed by Invocation and Pledge Allegiance. Following a dinner of corn beef and cabbage, President Carl updated Club members on upcoming District activities. Naples Sunset Rotary Program Chairman and Past President introduced Cpl Ray Erickson of the Collier County Sheriff's Department who discussed CODERED for keeping Citizens informed. Cpl Ray also explained "common sense" thinking when it comes to protecting our property. Many questions were asked during the presentation and all members enjoyed his excellent presentation. President Carl adjourned the meeting at 8:05pm.

March 10, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The March 10, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:45pm. After the Invocation and Pledge Allegiance dinner was served. President Carl updated the club members on various local and district wide activities. Following introduction of guests President Carl turned the meeting over to Past President George Leamon who introduced the speaker David White of the Collier County Sheriff's Department. Mr. White discussed executive identification theft and the proper utilization of various type of privacy tools including his recommendation to use a micro shredder versus a cross cut shredder. Members asked a number of questions and appreciated his presentation very much. The meeting was adjourned at 8pm.

March 3, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The March 3, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome who gave the invocation and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Following dinner Naples Sunset Rotary Sargeant of Arms raised $100.00 from members through various fines and associated happenings at the Club. President Carl Thome discussed a number of upcoming happenings for the Club as well as our March 24th fund raiser. Past President George Leamon introduced our speaker, David Shimmel, CEO of the David Lawrence Center. In this role, he provides leadership and management expertise to the management staff at the direction and discretion of the Board of Directors. Dave came to Collier County in 1984 as the Assistant Director of the David Lawrence Center before being appointed to Chief Executive Officer in 1989. He has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, is certified as a Mental Health Administrator and is licensed as a Mental Health Counselor. He has been working in the field of community mental health for more than 35 years. Throughout his career, Dave has taken an active leadership role in local, national and statewide organizations to insure the affordability and availability of mental health and substance abuse services. David discussed the latest services being offered at the David Lawrence Center and related happenings. Numerous questions were asked after his excellent presentation. February 24, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The February 24, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:45pm followed by Invocation and Pledge Allegiance. Following dinner guests were introduced and our District Governor Don Thomas was present and presented our club with two awards that only a handful in our district have received. The first award covers that there are 34,103 Rotary Clubs worldwide and Naples Sunset Rotary Club during 2009-2010 Year is one of 669 Rotary Clubs worldwide to attain status as a 100% Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member Club. The second award covers Naples Sunset Rotary as one of 1,113 Rotary Clubs worldwide to become an Every Rotarian Every Year Club (US$100 per capita club, 100% Member Participation). President Carl Thome, 2010-2011 President accepted the high honor of both awards and associated banners for the club from District Governor Dan Thomas.

President Carl Thome then introduced our guest speaker, Brandon Dowdy, President/CEO YMCA of the Palms, Naples, Florida. Brandon discussed Project Graduation and Rotary's continued involvement. Naples Sunset Rotary has supported Project Graduation in the past and continues to do so. Questions were asked from Brandon and the presentation was well received including budget handouts. February 17, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The February 17, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome followed by Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner member Robert Bodine introduced our guest speaker Robert Shattles of Hiawassee, Georgia. Robert discussed his gastro bypass and the excellent success he has had with it and his continued maintenance of the weight program. He discussed the pre discussions and groups as well as post recovery groups and discussion to maintain his weight goals. There were numerous questions after his presentation from a number of Naples Sunset Rotary Members. The meeting was adjourned by President Carl Thome at 8:10 PM.

February 10, 2010 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The February 10, 2011 Naples Sunset rotary Meeting was called to order by President Carl Thome at 6:45pm followed by Invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner President Thome introduced our guest speaker sculptor Michael Jernigan from Tallahassee, Florida. He described his project titled Honoring the Troops in great detail with a Powerpoint slide presentation. He traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan where he photographed and measured military personnel for an exhibit of 21 bronze portrait sculptures which will be exhibited nationwide during 2012 through 2014. Each branch of service will be represented (Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy). The exhibit will include enlisted and officers with no restrictions on race or gender. Michael also showed his gear that was worn during his travels to both Iran and Afghanistan. Numerous questions were asked and all the club members enjoyed his excellent presentation. February 3, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary Meeting


The February 3, 2011 Naples Sunset Rotary meeting was called to order at 6:45pm by President Carl Thome who gave the Invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. After dinner guests were introduced and President Carl mentioned a number of upcoming Rotary activities. President Carl then introduced Barry Higgins, General Manager of the Collier Carnage Semi-Pro Football Team who introduced Chuck McWilliams, President and Coach of the Collier Carnage Semi-Pro Football Team. Chuck discussed the latest happenings and the current status of the new team. Numerous questions were received from Naples Sunset Rotary members after an excellent presentation by both Barry and Chuck.
